This time, it’s the origin story of how Gru became the world’s greatest superhero and how he met his iconic Minions, teased by the final film’s ending. In The Rise of Gru, 12-year-old Gru is once again voiced by Oscar-nominated Steve Carell. Set in the suburbs of the 1970s, fans can quickly see that Gru is still plotting to take over the world from his basement despite being 12 years old. A fanboy of the super-villain group known as Vicious 6, Gru hatched a plan to become evil in order to join them. He gets some messy backups from his loyal followers, the Minions.
