During a recent press conference, Lightyear producer Galyn Susman explained that a lot of thought on the matter of Tim Allen isn’t voicing Buzz Lightyear and went into the Evans casting process. “Tim Allen is a Buzz Lightyear toy,” she said. “We don’t make Toy Story movies. We’re making a Buzz Lightyear movie. And the priority right now, we just need someone else to play that Lightyear, separate from the toys. ”

Director Angus MacLane had an additional explanation for why Buzz needed to be played by Evans. Lightyear is “a little bit more complete,” he said. Technically, he’s a bit smarter because he doesn’t like comic books. He has to be funny, but not too goofy. And that’s why we went with Chris.”

In December 2020, Chris Evans took to Instagram to announce that he would be reprising the role of Buzz in Lightyear. He begins by talking to the elephant in the room – which role usually goes to Tim Allen. “My team could barely contain their excitement when they told me that Pixar had pitched for me,” he recalls. “All they said was ‘Buzz Lightyear.’ I don’t know what that means, because Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear, and no one can touch his performance.”

In an interview, Evans added that although Tim Allen isn’t voicing Buzz Lightyear, “I took Tim Allen as a guide,” he said. “He did such a good job, and I would be foolish not to acknowledge the work he did. But I can’t just make an embarrassing impression. I had to somehow create my own understanding of the character, and try to create some new music in the snow while paying homage to the great work he did. ”
